First global agreement on the ethics of artificial intelligence

The 193 Member States of UNESCO have approved the first ethical framework on artificial intelligence.

This historic text establishes common values and principles that will guide the construction of the legal infrastructure necessary to guarantee the healthy development of artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is ubiquitous, makes many of our daily routines possible, and is delivering remarkable results in highly specialized fields, such as cancer detection and building inclusive environments for people with disabilities. It can also help fight problems like climate change and world hunger and reduce poverty.

But this technology is also bringing with it unprecedented new challenges. For example, there is an increase in gender and ethnic bias, significant threats to privacy, or the dangers of mass surveillance. Until now, there were no universal standards that would respond to these problems.
