The transition to carbon neutrality, a necessary and profitable transformation

Climate change not only has effects on people and the planet, but also on the economy. But this impact can be positive or negative depending on how it is managed. A new report from the Deloitte Center for Sustainable Progress (DCSP) under the name of "Global Turning Point" which is based on research conducted by the Deloitte Economics Institute and which was released at the beginning of June of this year (2022) during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, indicates that -if left unchecked- climate change could cost the world economy $178 trillion over the next 50 years, or a 7,6% reduction in gross domestic product (GDP) only in the year 2070.

The effects of environmental degradation directly affect the economic growth of a country. In this sense, experts warn that if global warming increases by around 3 °C towards the end of the century, the impact on people's lives could be significant, especially on the most vulnerable, and lead to losses in productivity. and in employment, as well as food and water shortages, a worsening of health and well-being, in addition to a general lowering of the quality of life standards globally.
