Fishing, hooks and ethics

Fishing, hooks and ethics

The newspaper El Espectador it is perhaps the only national newspaper that has defended, in recent decades, liberal or progressive values. It shines for its defense of human rights in a country marked by indifferent or criminal governments, but it fails to do so when it comes to informing and giving opinions on animal rights, as can be read in the May 7 editorial.

I summarize the question. The Constitutional Court determined that sport fishing could be considered animal abuse and should be prohibited. In the text, the newspaper maintains —and these arguments can also be fished out in the article by journalist Sergio Silva N., of May 12 — that there are three reasons to consider it an error. First, an economic one: hundreds of families live from this fishing. Second, another ecological one: it is an activity that protects ecosystems. And, finally, another regarding “personal autonomy”. I would like to review them from a critical perspective, or animalistic and vegan, for that matter.
