World's first octopus farm raises serious ethics debate

A debate about the ethics in the breeding and production of octopuses revolves around the Spanish aquaculture company Nueva Pescanova, which plans to open the first octopus farm in the world in 2023. This decision is encouraged by the growing demand in the world trade for cephalopods, octopus and squid, and businessmen say the breeding programs will relieve pressure on overstretched fisheries.

In fact, globally, nearly 630 metric tons of the invertebrate are expected to be traded by 000, up from 2025 tons a couple of years ago.

This seems logical, as many species that are commonly eaten have ideal breeding characteristics. They can reproduce prolifically, increase their body mass rapidly, and take only a year or two to mature. On the other hand, the Nueva Pescanova initiative promises to generate many local jobs.
